Wages or Gifts?

Romans 4:4-5: Now when a man works, his wages are not credited to him as a gift, but as an obligation. However, to the man who does not work but trusts God who justifies the wicked, his faith is credited as righteousness. (NIV).

Mathew 7:9-11: “Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!” (NIV)

Genesis 15:6: Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.

Parents desire to give gifts to their children. As my parent, God wants to give to me, but I often choose to put myself in the position of a hired wage earner, doing work with an expectation of a specific payment, wage or result from God. There is no righteousness found in this approach to God, because it requires no faith or trust in Him. I don’t have to believe in His desire to give to me when I approach Him as a hired worker. I can put all my faith in me.

I have been redeemed and invited into a relationship of a child of God. But I slip so easily into the hired worker mode, thinking that if I do certain things in His name I will have certain results. Many of my expectations are based on my personal history with Him, and the ways He’s met my needs, taught me, or worked through me in the past. My natural mind begins to form these memories into a system of tasks and wages. Maybe I’ve decided that I have been successful at something in the past, and now I know how to do it. I’ve boxed it up in to a neat little activity and I know how it’s going to turn out. I’ve worked for a wage, trying to put the Lord into an obligation system with me. I don’t do this with a lot of thought, it’s very subtle.

I’m aware that this happens so quietly that I don’t even notice until I feel the weariness that soon sets in. For me, that weariness comes because I’m working for Him instead of living by and through Him, distancing myself from the intimacy of relationship. He hasn’t changed, but I have. I also think, for me, it’s a weariness of boredom. Living a faith relationship with God is full of adventure and excitement, unlike checking off a to-do list every day.

When I put myself in the position of a hired worker, I cut Him short. I close an open heart that looks forward to His surprises as He gives gifts to me, because I have forgotten to trust that He wants to. He may be trying to give me gifts that I can’t recognize, because they don’t look like the expectation I have in mind. He may be doing new things for me that I miss, because I am expecting the old gifts. The mistake I’ve made is that I ever tied those old gifts to an action on my part in the first place. Isn’t that incredible pride to receive a gift from Him, and in my mind begin to attribute it to something I’ve done to earn it? As a parent myself, I would be sad if my children looked at me that way when I gave them a birthday present or a kiss on the cheek. I would want them to know that I just love them. I would hate for them to say “What’s this for?”. But that’s how my mind goes to work, revealing the truth that I don’t really believe that He wants to give me a gift just because He’s my parent.

Abraham believed in God, and trusted in the promises God made to Him. That trust was credited to Him as righteousness. I can only be justified and made righteous through faith, and faith itself is a gift He gives, not a wage I earn. God, help me to recognize your gifts and I ask for a gift of faith. Help me to live as your child again.

A friend of mine referenced himself as a “recovering perfectionist” this week. I completely understood what he meant. A few years ago I began a spiritual journey with Jesus that felt more like the perfect storm than peaceful green pastures. As a survivor of abuse and poverty, I had developed many coping mechanisms over the years. In other words, I was not used to failing, not used to being unable to fend for myself. When I earnestly prayed and submitted my life to God, He began the process of breaking down all those mechanisms. Why? Because they are not healthy for me, and hinder me from becoming all that he created me to be.

Perfectionism and performance worked well for me for a time, but didn’t bring any joy to my life. I felt trapped in my own ideas of what should be and what would be acceptable based on my expectations. Funny thing is, those expectations were rarely placed on my by others. It was a prison of my own design. Now, I don’t have to do anything that I don’t feel is being led by God, for me specifically, and that is true freedom. The fear and anxiety of perfectionism no longer have the hold on me that they once did.

Sometimes, I may do things that look foolish to my natural eyes. It is so easy to drop back into old patterns of judgement, expectation and comparison. But, with each new experience of faith, I find the strength to continue this recovery. I find renewed passion for it with the life that I feel by just being.

Because I’m in love. I have finally taken the time to get to know Google Chrome and move my life over to the family of Google applications.

Chrome is so fast, and there are extensions for everything. I do a lot of writing, book projects and journals, now using Google Notebooks for that. Family and business calendars now shared on Google Calendar. I love Tasks, Docs, and the easy download manager. I will never go back to Outlook again.

I realize I may be a bit geeky to be so excited about the options in Google, but, if it saves me time and helps me to do more of what I love to do, then count me in.
